South African rugby has been hit by another doping bombshell. The Sharks have confirmed that prop Kai Pratt failed a doping test conducted in Stellenbosch three months ago.
The 18-year-old was a member of the South African under-18 squad last year and attended Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus’ first alignment camp of 2026.
He was ruled out of this year’s Junior World Championship currently underway in Georgia, due to a foot injury suffered against Argentina in the Sanzaar Under-20 Rugby Championship in Gqeberha in April.
According to the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport, Pratt tested positive for an anabolic steroid and has requested the B-sample to be tested.
The outcome of the B-sample analysis will determine whether the matter proceeds to a formal hearing.
