Former World Cup winner Joan Capdevila of Spain has seemingly managed to fly to the United States for the World Cup final having called on US President Donald Trump for help after initially being denied entry into the country.
Capdevila’s former team-mate Marcos Senna posted a photo on Instagram with two two in front of an airplane and the caption “on course towards second star” – a reference to a potential second title for Spain.
European champions Spain face title holders Argentina in the final later Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Capdevila, who played every minute in Spain’s run to the first title in 2010, had earlier posted on X that his Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) needed for entry into the US was denied and that he couldn’t travel.
“I NEED HELP Donald Trump,” Capdevila posted. “If anyone knows how to fix this, I’ll be grateful to you for life.”
It was not known why Capdevila was able to travel in the end. Radio station Cope suggested he was initially denied entry because he featured in a legends match of the Spanish league in Iran.
