Max Fried has been on the injured list since May 16, and he made his first rehab start on Friday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Fried went three innings in his first game in over two months. He was facing off against the Boston Red Sox Triple-A affiliate and struck out three batters. He gave up two earned runs, one of which came on a solo home run to Nate Eaton in the top of the third inning.
Fried threw a total of 52 pitches, and 32 of them were for strikes. He will likely need a few more rehab outings before he’s ready to rejoin the Yankees. He was a Cy Young Award candidate last season, and his return should be a huge boost for the Yankees.
Cam Schlittler is having a phenomenal season so far, and adding Fried to the rotation will make the Yankees an even better team. A rotation led by Schlittler, Fried, Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón would be one of the best in the American League and set the Yankees up for a deep run in October.
According to YES Network’s Conor Foley, Fried topped out at 95.4 mph and averaged 94.5 mph on his four-seam fastball. He threw seven different types of pitches as well. Before his injury, he was averaging 94.7 mph on his fastball, so he seems to be recovering well from the bone bruise that landed him on the injured list in the first place.
