Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s wait for his senior India cap went on after the teenager was again left out of the playing eleven for the first T20I against England at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street on Wednesday.
His stunning IPL 2026 campaign, where he topped the run charts with 776 runs to claim the Orange Cap, had many expecting his debut to come on British soil.
However, at the toss during the first T20I, captain Shreyas Iyer confirmed the top order would remain unchanged, with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson keeping their places.
The management’s reasoning was straightforward: both had been key figures in India’s T20 World Cup 2026 triumph, where they beat New Zealand in the final, and there was no desire to unsettle a combination that had delivered on the biggest stage.
The youngster’s wait, though, finally ended in Manchester as Sooryavanshi was named in India’s starting lineup for the second T20I.
