Former NFL MVP Cam Newton isn’t defending Terrion Arnold’s legal situation, but he is urging people to view it through a broader lens.
Speaking on a recent episode of his 4th & 1 podcast, Newton addressed the former Detroit Lions cornerback’s ongoing legal case after Arnold was arrested and charged with multiple felonies. Newton also used the situation to deliver a message to athletes and public figures about the responsibility that comes with fame.
Newton Says Athletes Must Understand the Spotlight
Newton began by acknowledging Arnold’s background and the support he’s received from people who know him well, including former Alabama head coach Nick Saban.
“He went to Alabama. Obviously, having a letter of recommendation to the judge, from Nick Saban. This does not match who he is,” Newton said as quoted by Lions OnSI. “But what I will do in this particular situation is use Terrion Arnold’s situation to not only speak to Terrion, but also to speak to athletes and people of influence around the world.”
Newton then delivered the comment that has generated widespread attention.
“You don’t think you’re a big deal, brother. You don’t think you’re a big deal, sister, until something happens that will remind you that you can be on top of the world one day, next day the world could be on top of you. Terrion knows better, and at the end of the day, was he wrong? He was only wrong because he got caught. And when you unpack what happened, and the amount of money or the things that was stolen, it will leave anybody outraged.”
Newton Speaks About Arnold’s Character
Despite his blunt comments, Newton made it clear he doesn’t believe the allegations define Arnold as a person.
Having known Arnold personally, Newton said the public perception created by the recent headlines doesn’t match the young man he has come to know.
“Man look, and I know Terrion. I know his family, played with C1N, the COVID year. I know him too well. What the world seen in Terrion Arnold in the last two to three weeks, is not an accurate depiction of who that young man is. This is what I know to be true. Take my word as the gospel. The kid has a smile that will light up the place, and he has an infectious personality.”
Lions Moved On Following Arrest
Arnold’s legal troubles ultimately led the Detroit Lions to release the former first-round pick. He continues to maintain his innocence as his legal case proceeds through the Florida court system.
Newton’s remarks have added another perspective to a story that continues to draw national attention, balancing criticism of Arnold’s alleged decisions with praise for the character Newton says he has witnessed firsthand.
