The Baltimore Ravens offered their support to Calais Campbell and his family after the death of his mother, Nateal Campbell, who was 71. The Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday night that Atlanta police found Nateal Campbell unresponsive inside her home and that a male suspect was in custody. Details surrounding her death remain under investigation.
The Campbell family released a statement Tuesday night, asking for privacy as they grieve.
“We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell,” the family said. “While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family.”
The Ravens also released a statement offering condolences to Campbell, who returned to Baltimore this offseason for what he has said will likely be his final NFL season.
“We are incredibly saddened to learn about the passing of Calais Campbell’s mother,” the team said. “We extend our deepest condolences and full support to Calais and his family during this difficult time. We ask that everyone please respect their privacy while they grieve from this heartbreaking loss.”
Campbell, 39, is one of eight children, and the veteran defensive lineman has often spoken about the influence of his family throughout a career that has made him one of the NFL’s most respected players on and off the field. His father, Charles, died in 2003, when Campbell was 17.
A four-time All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowl selection, Campbell was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round of the 2008 NFL draft with the No. 50 overall pick. He’s played for the Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Ravens, Atlanta Falcons, and Miami Dolphins before returning to Baltimore on May 6 on a one-year, $5.5 million contract.
Campbell previously played for the Ravens from 2020 to 2022, becoming a respected leader in the locker room and a key veteran presence on the defensive line. His return this offseason was viewed as a significant move for a team with championship expectations and a defense filled with young talent.
For now, the focus is on Campbell and his family as they mourn the loss of their matriarch.
