The Anaheim Ducks have already sent John Carlson away in a rights trade to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Their defense may get even more depleted: Jacob Trouba appears to be on the way out.
Trouba has actually never been an unrestricted free agent, but barring a late change in negotiations, it’s trending that way.
And at least in some viewpoints, it’s not a surprise.

Why are Ducks likely losing Jacob Trouba?
Contract negotiations simply aren’t going well between Anaheim and their veteran defenseman.
Trouba wants more years than the Ducks are willing to offer.
“The Carlson situation directly affects Jacob Trouba,” The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun wrote in a new article this week. “Not that they’re similar players, but they’re both pending UFA, top-four, right-shot defensemen, and there are few of those to go around. The door isn’t completely closed on Trouba returning to the Anaheim Ducks, but it’s very likely Trouba, 32, is headed to market. Term has been a major issue in talks with the Ducks. The team wants to go shorter term. Trouba, who has never been a UFA, is looking for more term.”
Because of the scarcity of high-end, right-shot defenseman, Trouba should do well for himself on the open market.
There are also a handful of teams reportedly in on Carlson, which helps Trouba’s market. If one of them misses Carlson, they may be prepared to make Trouba a very nice offer.
“It’ll be musical chairs for Trouba as he sees where Carlson ends up and then tries to grab one of the open seats,” LeBrun writes.
Meanwhile, back in Anaheim, the Ducks have some defensive replacing to do.
