The Border Management Authority has increased its deployment at the Beitbridge border crossing following last week’s announcement of a temporary repatriation processing centre in Musina, Limpopo.
The move comes as several countries, including Zimbabwe, continue to repatriate their citizens amid growing tensions over illegal immigration in South Africa.
Various organisations are expected to protest on Wednesday to raise awareness around the issue of undocumented foreign nationals.
BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi said the number of people exiting the country at Beitbridge had increased significantly compared to the same period last year.
“As we are comparing with this time last year, we are seeing an increase in terms of movements. Just in one day at Beitbridge on the 27th, we were able to process like three thousand repatriations that were done in just one day. So it’s quite a lot. We are now not calculating the normal movements of other travellers who are just going outside the country,” Mogotsi said.
