The City of Cape Town says Zimbabwean nationals gathered outside the Zimbabwean Consulate in District Six will be relocated to the Department of Home Affairs Repatriation Centre in Epping.
The relocation, which begins Sunday morning, forms part of a joint operation between the City, the Department of Home Affairs and the Zimbabwean Consulate to facilitate voluntary repatriation.
The City says all repatriation requests will now be processed at the Epping facility before residents are transported to Beit Bridge.
City spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo says, “City Safety and Security Services are on site to maintain public order and to assist with the relocation. Our Traffic and Cleansing Departments are simultaneously managing access routes and waste management in the area.
“We appreciate the continued support of humanitarian organisations operating in the area. Residents and members of the public are urged to exercise caution and avoid the immediate vicinity of the consulate,” Tyhalibongo adds.
