Stem cell therapies derived from donated cord tissue are gaining traction in South Africa. Doctors reported encouraging results in patients living with chronic pain, sports injuries and inflammatory conditions.
As access to the treatment expands and local research gathers pace, experts say regenerative medicine could be entering a new phase.
Chief Medical Officer at Next Biosciences, Dr Yvonne Holt explains the current effectiveness of these therapies and how they would soon become part of mainstream healthcare.
“The umbilical cord blood and cord tissue of a newborn baby contain stem cells. Stem cells are naive cells in our bodies that can regenerate, they change into different tissues in our body. Scientists have said let’s capture these cells, and we can use them to regenerate damaged or diseased tissues in our bodies.
