The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has called on Premier Panyaza Lesufi to implement the Hostel Redevelopment Programme, which seeks to transform all hostels into decent, family-oriented housing.
This includes Mohlakeng Hostel on the West Rand.
The call comes following an oral response in the Gauteng Legislature by the province’s Human Settlement MEC, Tasneem Motara who told the legislature that no budget has ever been allocated or committed to its refurbishment.
Motara indicated that responsibility for upgrading the hostel or relocating residents lies squarely with the municipality.
DA Gauteng shadow Minister of Human Settlement Mervyn Cirota says people living in hostels deserve better living conditions.
“DA calls on Premier Lesufi and MEC Motara to stop trivialising the hostel issue and implement the Hostel Redevelopment Programme, which does not discriminate but seeks to transform all hostels into decent, family-oriented housing. The DA is the only party committed to transforming hostels from neglected infrastructure into safe, dignified, and family-oriented housing.”
MEC Tasneem Motara neglects Mohlakeng Hostel residents living in appalling conditions with no proper sanitation or refuse removal — and simply blames the municipality.
