The Supreme Court of Appeal is expected to deliver judgment on Tuesday in former Zambian President Edgar Lungu’s family’s appeal against the August 2025 High Court in Pretoria judgment.
The judgment found that the Zambian government is entitled to repatriate Lungu’s remains for a state funeral and burial.
His remains have been the subject of an impasse between the Southern African country’s government and the Lungu family since his passing on June 5, 2025.
The Lungu family turned to the appellate court for relief in May, arguing that the right to bury is an autonomous one which belongs to Esther Lungu, the widow of the late former president.
