Parliament’s Police Committee says it will this week conduct an oversight visit across the country to ascertain the police’s readiness ahead of the June 30 deadline for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country.
On Monday, acting police minister Firoz Cachalia announced that R600 million has been set aside to ensure smooth operational readiness in the SAPS ahead of the deadline.
Committee chair Ian Cameron says while coordination appears to be in place, there are concerns about whether the available resources will be sufficient to handle any potential issues.
“We are conducting other oversight visits later this week in different areas of the country, and I think that will also give us a better idea. Operationally, we can’t interfere, but from what we’ve seen so far, it does seem that the relevant coordination is being done. I think what concerns me slightly is that there are people that have openly and publicly been inciting violence and encouraging violence, and I’m yet to see them being brought to book.
