The Independent Policing Union of South Africa (IPUSA) has called for calm amid growing tensions between the South African Police Service and the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC).
The union says the growing public standoff between the two units undermines the rule of law and public trust.
The dispute, linked to high-profile arrests and warrants involving senior police officials, also raised concerns about divisions within law enforcement.
General Secretary of IPUSA, Mpho Kwinika, “If they do have differences, we believe strongly that there are channels where these issues could be taken to and address them. These things that they are doing undermines law, the rule of law. Right. It also erodes, you know, public trust, and it has got a direct impact on the members on the ground. You must remember that in 2009, there was tension between the Scorpions and the South African Police Service, and the Scorpion was closed down. We believe strongly that this conflict between IDAC and the South African Police Service shall not lead to IDAC being closed down, because crime in this country is so sophisticated, and it needs units such as IDAC.”
