Residents in Mashishing in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, have closed down all the shops in the town during a march to hand over two memoranda to the Department of Home Affairs and the Department of Employment and Labour.
They are calling for the Department of Employment and Labour and Home affairs to conduct status verification of the foreign national shop owners.
March convener Samora Mlotshwa says they are giving the two departments seven days to respond to their demands.
Mlotshwa says, “Starting from tomorrow, we want to work with them and visit each and every employer that is a foreigner to check if these people have the necessary documentations; they have invested that R5 million that is a requirement in order for you to run a business here, and (whether) all of those people working here are doing scarce skills (sic) and what we have also checked is that most of these undocumented foreign nationals, those who claim to be having documents, they are all using one document for almost 100 people. So, we are aware of that. So, we want that thing to come to an end,” says Mlotshwa.
