The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially found their next bench boss. On Wednesday, the organization announced the hiring of Jim Hiller as the franchise’s new head coach, ending a lengthy search that followed one of the most disappointing hockey seasons in the team’s recent history. Hiller becomes the 41st head coach in Maple Leafs history, taking over a club that is suddenly facing a very different reality than it was just a few years ago.
For nearly a decade, Toronto was viewed as one of the NHL’s most consistent playoff teams. That all changed this past season when the Maple Leafs endured a disastrous campaign that left them near the bottom of the standings and ultimately resulted in the franchise winning the NHL Draft Lottery. Now, the organization is hoping Hiller can help lead the turnaround.

Strong Resume Behind the Bench
The 57-year-old arrives in Toronto after spending the last three seasons with the Los Angeles Kings organization. After beginning as an assistant coach, Hiller was promoted to head coach during the 2023-24 season and remained in the role through 2025-26.
During his time behind the Kings’ bench, Hiller posted an impressive 93-58-24 record across 175 games, good for a .600 winning percentage. His teams consistently remained competitive and established a reputation for structured, disciplined hockey.
Before joining Los Angeles, Hiller spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the New York Islanders. Toronto fans may also remember him from his previous stint with the Maple Leafs organization from 2015-16 through 2018-19, when he served as an assistant coach. During those four seasons, the Leafs reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs three times.
Pressure Comes With the Job
No coaching position in hockey comes with more scrutiny than in Toronto, and Hiller is stepping into a situation filled with expectations despite the team’s recent struggles. The Maple Leafs are attempting to transition from one of the league’s biggest disappointments back into a contender. Winning the draft lottery provides hope for the future, but turning that potential into wins will be Hiller’s responsibility.
Toronto believes it has found the right leader to guide the next chapter of the franchise. Now comes the difficult part: proving that the organization can quickly return to relevance and eventually back into the Stanley Cup Playoff picture. For Hiller, the challenge begins immediately.
