A third Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officer has been added to the R14.9 million precious stones robbery case before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
Keisha Leigh Stols appeared in court after handing herself over to police and was charged with robbery with aggravating circumstances and fraud.
She joined co-accused Adrian Mackenzie and Etienne van der Walt who appeared in court on Monday. Prosecutors allege the trio posed as members of a multi-disciplinary law enforcement team investigating suspected lithium smuggling.
They allegedly assaulted the complainant and robbed the person of six boxes of high-grade sugilite and manganese stones.
The incident allegedly took place in Killarney, Johannesburg, in February 2023.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Gauteng spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole says the matter has been postponed to next Thursday for bail applications, with all three accused remaining in custody.
“The accused allegedly posed as members of a multidisciplinary law enforcement team to rob the complainant off precious stones valued at R14.9 million, all three accused remain in custody.”
Kersha-Leigh Stols will be added to the other two accused who appeared in court yesterday. All three will apply for bail on July 16.
