David Tyree, the New York Giants legend renowned for his iconic helmet catch in Super Bowl XLII, has called for the team to sit rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart for the remainder of the 2025 season, citing mounting injury risks.
The 2-12 Giants selected Dart, a 22-year-old signal-caller, with the 25th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft. While Dart has flashed potential and even secured a pair of wins after replacing initial starter Russell Wilson, he has also suffered a concussion and was briefly pulled from Sunday’s loss to the Commanders for another head injury evaluation.
Speaking on the New York Post’s “Blue Rush” podcast with host Brandon London, Tyree advocated starting veteran backup Jameis Winston instead.
“I’ve personally been heavy on sitting Jaxson Dart ever since I saw Jameis Winston [play],” Tyree said. “I think the thought process the Giants had at the beginning of the season was the right game plan. Get a young, talented quarterback in and allow him to actually sit and learn. You have Jameis Winston in there; he actually gave you a good flash, and some revival, some excitement. He’s not just a media frenzy. He’s actually a solid NFL quarterback who can really produce for you.
“And I think they need to sit Jaxson Dart in light of what we’ve seen. The positives, we’ve seen enough positives. We know that we actually have something special brewing. The risks are too great at this point, in light of what the Giants are paying for it. You’re paying these backup quarterbacks, put them out there and give them a chance to continue their careers in the National Football League.
“I think to those types of front office decisions, where is this just about us trying to get a win? So [interim coach Mike] Kafka is in there, you got [GM Joe] Schoen in there, you got hard decisions to make. So sit Jaxson Dart’s behind down, so he can be the future of the franchise.”
Winston, an 11-year veteran, impressed in relief duty during Dart’s earlier concussion absence, throwing for 567 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, a rushing score, and even catching a touchdown pass across losses to the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions.
With meaningless games remaining against the Vikings, Raiders, and Cowboys, Tyree believes preserving Dart’s health outweighs any further on-field evaluation this year.
