James Tronstein, a blue-chip recruit who ranked as the No. 40 player in the 2026 class by Perfect Game, will join Vanderbilt baseball’s star-studded freshman class after not signing with the Houston Astros as a 15th-round pick.
Tronstein confirmed with The Tennessean that he would not sign July 24.
Tronstein was the No. 170 player in the 2026 MLB Draft by MLB Pipeline and could have been selected anywhere between rounds 2-5 had he been signable, but he demanded a large signing bonus and slipped. The Astros selected him in the 15th round, likely as a backup in case one of their other players did not sign.
Listed as 5-11, 170 pounds, Tronstein is undersized but regardless has big power and put up some of the best exit velocities at the MLB Draft Combine. He has an aggressive approach that Vanderbilt hitting coach Jason Esposito could help him tone down.
A high school shortstop, Tronstein is unlikely to surpass returning starter Ryker Waite. He could also fit at second base or the outfield, and the Commodores lost both starting corner outfielders in 2026. Whichever position he tries out, there will be lots of competition with fellow freshmen Gunner Skelton, Noah Wilson and Michael Holt, plus transfers Hunter Ray, Blaize Ward, Niko Brini and Bud Coombs.
Tronstein joining Vanderbilt’s class means that the Commodores have six top-100 players in the class: Tronstein, Skelton, Wilson; pitchers Joseph Contreras and Bo Holloway and two-way player RJ Cope. That’s the most since at least 2011, surpassing five top-100 freshmen in the 2018 class.
