Per Mertesacker will replace Andreas Rettig as managing director for sport at the German Football Federation (DFB) from January 1, broadcaster ntv/RTL/Sky said on Friday.
Rettig has already announced that he is stepping down in December.
Former defender Mertesacker won the 2014 World Cup with Germany and then spent eight years as head of Arsenal’s youth academy. He has also been a popular TV pundit.
His expected appointment is part of major changes at the DFB, with Jürgen Klopp set to be appointed as men’s coach after a third straight early World Cup exit.
