Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to name James Maddison as their new captain. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium club are preparing for life without CristianRomero, who has been their skipper so far. Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi has now identified Maddison as the Argentine’s successor, with the 29-year-old to be formally announced as Tottenham’s new captain in the coming weeks. Romero has been linked with Chelsea, while Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also believed to be keen on recruiting his services.
The Lilywhites have started pre-season today, securing a 1-0 victory over League One club MK Dons in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Hotspur Way. Maddison was not included in the Spurs’ matchday squad today and fans are hoping he is fit to return to action for the next game.
He made three appearances last season having been out for most of the campaign due to an ACL injury he sustained during a friendly against Newcastle United in August 2025.
