Chicago — The Tigers recalled reliever Ty Madden from Triple-A Toledo before Tuesday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs to give some relief to a relief staff that’s seen plenty of action the last two days.
Detroit used five players from the bullpen during Monday night’s 8-6, 10-inning victory at Wrigley Field and each threw at least an inning after Jack Flaherty worked the first four.
The Tigers called on four pitchers in long appearances Sunday after Casey Mize left 3⅓ innings into a loss to the Los Angeles Angels.
The right-handed Madden (0-0, 3.15 ERA) was optioned to Toledo on June 14 after making seven appearances, including a start.
Detroit will make a corresponding move — most likely a position player — before the start of Tuesday night’s game.
