The Miami Heat‘s recent surge in their chances to land LeBron James apparently didn’t come from an all-out pitch from the team’s star offseason acquisition, Giannis Antetokounmpo. If anything, it’s actually been just the opposite—sort of. However, while speaking recently about James and his free agency decision, Giannis’s comments may have done much of the heavy lifting and actually been a pitch in itself.
During an interview with Mike Cugno of CBS Miami, Antetokounmpo was asked about what his free agency pitch to James would be. This is where The Greek Freak’s interesting response, which began by admitting he doesn’t think he’ll “pitch anything to him,” was not only an excellent response, but also high praise and a nice pitch without actually technically being one.
“I don’t think I’ll pitch anything to him,” Antetokounmpo said. “I feel like in his career, he’s always made good decisions. That’s what history has shown. Everywhere he’s been, he’s won. If he believes the Miami Heat organization is a good decision for him and his family, he should make that decision. But he’s one of the greatest players to play this game, if not the greatest. I don’t think there’s a team on the planet that would not want him to be there.”

“For me, having a guy like that would be wonderful to learn from, to try to pick his brain …He’s a person I definitely look up to. He’ll make the best decision for his family. He’s been in Miami, he knows what Miami is about, and when he’s ready, he’ll decide.”

It’s hard not to appreciate both the transparency and the open response to his feelings on James and his free agency decision. Although Antetokounmpo said he won’t pitch James on returning to the Heat, the strong response and his feelings about the situation and the possibility of playing with LeBron feel like more than enough of a pitch in itself.
