A look back at the 1954 season for the Cardinals
The Cardinals were a last-place team in 1954, starting the season with five straight losses and finishing 2-10. They scored the second-fewest points in the league with 15.3 per game and gave up the second-most, allowing 28.9 per game.
They scored more than 20 points just once. They allowed 30 or more seven times.
1954 individual honors, leaders
The Cardinals had three Pro Bowlers:
- RB Ollie Matson
- CB Night Train Lane
- OL/DL Jerry Groom
Matson was also a first-team All-Pro, and Lane made the All-Pro second team.
Lamar McHan started 11 games at quarterback. He passed for 1,475 yards, six touchdowns and a league-leading 22 interceptions.
Matson scored a team-leading seven total touchdowns and had 1,117 total yards from scrimmage. He rushed for 506 yards and four touchdowns. He had 34 receptions for 611 yards and three touchdowns. He also returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns.
Don Stonesifer had a team-leading 44 catches for 607 yards and three touchdowns.
Lane led the NFL with 10 interceptions on defense.
