With training camp near for the Jacksonville Jaguars, there are going to be players within each position group who will be under pressure to perform well.
For some, a strong showing throughout training camp and the preseason could result in more playing time or a roster spot earned. But on the flip side, inconsistency can lead to a tumble down the depth chart.
As part of our training camp preview, we’ll be taking a look at which player from each position group needs to perform well over the next month before roster cutdowns take place.
Jaguars player under the most pressure at quarterback: Carter Bradley
Perhaps Nick Mullens could fall into this category, but even with a bit of an up-and-down showing during offseason programs, I don’t believe that his roster spot as the Jaguars’ backup is in jeopardy. His experience is valuable to have behind Trevor Lawrence.
So instead, I’ve chosen Carter Bradley, who is likely competing with Joey Aguilar for the lone quarterback spot on the practice squad.
The Jaguars were fond of Bradley last season and his ability to run the scout team offense, something defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile praised. His experience filling that role and operating in Liam Coen’s offense could be a differentiator for him, with Aguilar being a rookie.
That said, teams are always looking for the next up-and-coming player within each position group. Oftentimes, when discussing these back-end roster spots, teams will prioritize potential over stability.
Making the jump last season from Appalachian State to Tennessee, Aguilar proved to be a still-ascending player, creating more big plays while also being more efficient against higher-level competition.
Bradley’s experience may give him the early edge, but he’ll have to pair playmaking with that to earn the QB3 role. Otherwise, chances are whoever doesn’t earn that job will be released and looking for a new team.
