Karolina Muchova and Maria Sakkari made WTA tennis news on Saturday, July 18, 2026 for very different reasons.
We last saw Muchova in last Saturday’s Wimbledon women’s singles final and assumed she was training for the hardcourt season leading up to the US Open.
That is not the case as shared by Muchova herself on social media.

What Muchova shared
Muchova was photographed sitting up in a hospital bed. She indicated that she had a minor surgery that will keep her out of action for a few weeks. Injuries have plagued her throughout her career so no one wants more of that for her.
She did not specify what the issue was that required surgery.
She is on the WTA players list for the Cincinnati Open beginning August 8.

Maria Sakkari shares accomplishment with her mother at Athens Open
Greek tennis star Maria Sakkari rarely talks about her mother, Angeliki Kanellopoulou, a former WTA Top 50 player in the late 1980s.
She got very emotional when a reporter at this year’s French Open told her that she knew her mom.
Maria Sakkari hits during her loss to Iga Swiatek in round 3 of the women’s singles at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., March 9, 2026.
At the five minute point in the clip, Sakkari breaks down talking about how her mother never stopped believing in her even though she was not successful in juniors.
Seeing this in Paris and knowing that the Athens Open was back on the WTA calendar this year for the first time in 35 years, and Sakkari’s mother is a former finalist (1986), we should not be surprised that she broke down when she won her semifinal match on Saturday.
Sakkari faces Barbora Krejcikova in the Athens Open final on Sunday, July 19 at 1:00 PM EDT. She has never beaten Krejcikova in three previous tries from 2014 to 2021.
