The photographs came from Ankan Kar, Chief Correspondent and Team Lead at Sports Now, who posted them without any suggestion of tension. “Rohit Sharma with Head Coach Gautam Gambhir & Batting Coach at Lord Balcony,” he wrote alongside the images. Kar moved fast to shut that reading down and explain what had actually happened on the balcony. “Take a chill pill, guys! The Sydney reference needs little explanation. Rohit sat out the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy amid a wretched run of 31 runs in five innings, and reports of a rift with Gambhir swirled for weeks, even as Rohit himself said the coach and chief selector Ajit Agarkar had backed his decision.
According to PTI reports, “Agarkar warned Rohit against the move as this could be an issue for his selection for the England tour.” It is well known now that Rohit did not feature in the England Tests and announced his retirement before the series. He also had to step down from ODI captaincy in the meantime.

What is telling is how quickly people reached for the darkest reading. That happens when an environment has already lost the benefit of the doubt, and India’s has, after a leak about Rohit’s future, a board clarification and Harsha Bhogle calling the whole thing damaging.
Gambhir will know how this works by now. When results are poor and communication is messy, every photograph becomes evidence for whatever theory the viewer already holds. A win at Lord’s on Sunday would do more to end that than any clarification could.
