In news that shouldn’t surprise anybody, Fiorentina announced that Amir Richardson has departed the club. His destination is a familiar one: Le Havre, where he first broke through into the senior team back in 2021. According to Nicolò Schira, it’s a loan with an option of €8 million; I think Reims gets €800,000 of that if le Ciel et Marine pull the trigger.
Richardson is at a crossroads in his young career, which has gone quite badly over the past 18 months. It took him most of the season to find his feet after he joined the Viola in 2024 for €9 million but over the final month of the season, he turned in a string of excellent performances under Raffaele Palladino, setting an expectation of an expanded role. Unfortunately, Stefano Pioli jerked him around quite a bit, freezing him out of the squad during a summer of personal tragedy and leaving the young Moroccan feeling understandably abandoned. After openly stating his desire to leave, he was exiled to the stands and eventually shipped to København on loan with an option.
I fully expected the Løverne to make the move permanent, given how badly they needed youth and talent in the midfield, but Richardson talked himself out of the match day squad in Copenhagen too, with staff and journalists citing an unprofessional attitude that limited him to just 5 appearances and convinced the Danes to send him back to Tuscany. Having fallen out with 2 clubs in quick succession, the 24-year-old might be on the verge of developing a reputation for being difficult.
Le Havre should be the perfect place for him to rehab his value and, more importantly, get back on the pitch. There are a few senior figures in the squad to provide guidance but most of the roster is packed with youth, as befits one of the best academy systems in France. Hopefully a return to a familiar setting will bring the best out of the 9-time Morocco international. I still think his combination of physical talent and technical ability offers a tantalizing profile but he needs to arrest his current downward trajectory if he wants to be anything more than a curiosity. I still think there’s a good player in there if he can sort himself out.
