Over the past few weeks, Caitlin Clark has been in the headlines for a lot of less-than-fun reasons, including her high-profile incident with Alyssa Thomas, her lingering injury issues, her outburst at a referee, and her recent three-point struggles. But on Friday night, she reminded everyone why she’s the face of the WNBA.
In the 110-107 win over the Seattle Storm on Friday night, Clark had perhaps the best game of her entire career as she became the first player in WNBA history with 45 points and 10 assists. However, she insists that’s still not as good as she can play.
Caitlin Clark Went Off
Clark was dominant from start to finish on Friday night, stuffing the stat sheet with 45 points, 10 assists, two rebounds, and four steals all while playing under 30 minutes of the game.
The night was capped off with a step-back three-pointer that turned out to be the game’s game-winner.
“Some nights, like, you know you have it, even before the ball tips,” Clark said after the game via ESPN. “I felt like it was going to be one of those for me.
“I feel like you just have to believe you’re going to have those type of nights, and you have to visualize having those types of nights. And I feel like that’s what I did.”
It was a historic night for Clark. Her 45 points set a franchise record, and she became the first player in league history to do so in fewer than 30 minutes. With six 3-pointers, Clark became the fastest player to reach 200 3-point field goals (74 games). It was also her fourth game with 30 points and 10 assists, which is especially impressive considering there are only four other instances in league history.
‘I can play better’
While it might have been the best game of her entire career, Clark still does not feel like she’s played fully up to her potential as she rebounds from her injury.
“I still feel like I can play better,” Clark said. “It’s one of the hardest things, coming back from injury and being out of the groove and having time off. You just have to kind of continue to believe in yourself and believe in the work you put in. This is great, but we have another really difficult test tomorrow, so got to get ready for that.”
If that’s not her best, we’ll have to see what her best truly is in the coming weeks.
