The New York Yankees are heading towards the 2026 MLB trade deadline as one of the top contenders for the World Series coming out of the American League.
While they might not be atop the AL East right now, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they made up the ground needed to retake the division lead from the Tampa Bay Rays. If they’re buying, the Yankees could be eyeing a reliever or starting pitcher.
With such a trade target in mind, Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report is predicting the Yankees will use Jasson Dominguez as a key trade chip to land such a pitcher this summer. Dominguez is predicted to be dealt, and it wouldn’t be a surprise at all.
Yankees’ Jasson Dominguez predicted to be traded to land pitching help
“New York Yankees: Jasson Dominguez is traded at the deadline,” Rueter predicts. “He is batting just .235/.273/.409 with an 89 OPS+ and 0.4 WAR on the year, but his raw tools still make him an appealing buy-low target for a seller at the deadline if the Yankees go after a controllable arm.”
While the Yankees might be more likely to target a reliever, they could also pursue a starting pitcher this summer. Someone under club control beyond 2026 would be very appealing as a trade target for the Yankees.
Reid Detmers or Jose Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels would make a lot of sense, as could Joe Ryan of the Minnesota Twins.
But, maybe more realistically, the Yankees could target an elite reliever like Mason Miller of the San Diego Padres. If they target Miller, or some other elite reliever under club control beyond 2026, the Yankees might look to use Dominguez as a key trade chip.
This past offseason, there were rumors about the Yankees trading one of Dominguez or Spencer Jones if they brought back the two outfielder free agents.

After Trent Grisham accepted the qualifying offer and Cody Bellinger re-signed, the Yankees could see both Dominguez and Jones as expendable.
While Aaron Judge is currently on the injured list, and his timeline to return will dictate a lot of the team’s deadline plans, if he’s set to return sooner rather than later, Dominguez could be a sensible trade chip.
His production this season for the Yankees isn’t good enough to justify keeping him as an untouchable trade chip like he was before. But his high upside might still be enough to get a team to part with a valuable pitcher.
Reuter is predicting the Yankees will trade the 23-year-old outfielder at this year’s deadline, helping the Yankees improve their World Series odds by landing a controllable pitcher in the process, in a move that would hardly be a surprise.
