Bill Belichick’s college football venture hasn’t gone according to plan.
Granted, there are two sides of opinion when it comes to grading Belichick’s college football endeavors. On one side, the legendary coach has only had one year with a North Carolina program needing a rebuild. That kind of effort takes more time to do so effectively.
However, some share the opinion of ESPN commentator Paul Finebaum, who feels Belichick should consider retiring after a 4-8 season with the Tar Heels.
“No one is taking away his six Super Bowls, but ending like he is going to end is really embarrassing and sad—and in many ways pathetic here because this didn’t have to happen,” Finebaum said on ESPN’s Get Up. “He only took this job because he was bitter that he couldn’t get an NFL job. He chose the wrong place. He has tried to use the magic of yesteryear, and it simply hasn’t worked. …He won’t get fired, but he should seriously consider retirement.”
Another disastrous season for the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach might lead to more people jumping on the retirement bandwagon with Finebaum.
Nothing can ever take away from Belichick’s NFL accomplishments, but a failed run at North Carolina, combined with the way his run ended with the New England Patriots, would be a sad way to see the curtains close on the career of the greatest coach of all time.
