Michigan basketball’s new head coach Mike Boynton Jr. has wasted little time restocking his staff and bringing in another veteran presence.
The program announced Monday that Mike Martin, Brown’s longtime head coach, is joining Boynton’s inaugural staff as an assistant coach.
Martin’s addition is the first personnel hire Boynton has made since he received a two-year deal last week and had the interim tag removed following Dusty May’s departure to the NBA last month.
“Mike is someone I’ve admired for a long time,” Boynton said in a statement. “He’s an outstanding coach, an exceptional teacher and one of the best recruiters in the game, but more than anything, he’s a great person who truly invests in his players.
“At Brown, he’s built consistently competitive teams through player development and a winning culture, and those values align perfectly with what we’re building here in Ann Arbor.”
Martin, 44, spent the last 14 years as the head coach at Brown, where he went 171-202, made two postseason appearances and finished in the top half of the Ivy League five times.
His best season came in 2018-19, when he guided the Bears to their first 20-win season and first postseason victory in program history, which earned him Ivy League Coach of the Year honors.
Martin has spent most of his basketball life at Brown, where he was a four-year starting guard from 2000-04. He began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater for a year before spending six years as an assistant at Penn.
When he took over as Brown’s head coach in 2012, he was 29 years old and the fourth-youngest head coach in Division I basketball. A decade later, he became the winningest coach in the program’s 120-year history in 2023.
“I’m incredibly grateful to Coach Boynton for the opportunity to join the Michigan basketball family,” Martin said in a statement. “Michigan has established itself as one of the premier programs in college basketball, and it’s easy to see why. The championship culture, the people and the commitment to excellence all make this a special place.
“I’m excited to get to work with our student-athletes and help build on everything this program has accomplished.”
Martin is the first of likely several new faces on the coaching staff. With assistant Justin Joyner being hired as Oregon State’s head coach in the spring and assistant Drew Williamson following May to the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, Boynton still has more positions to fill this summer.
