Harry Kane has opened up about his golf outing with Donald Trump.
The England captain confirmed the meeting during a pre-match press conference ahead of his team’s World Cup quarterfinal against Norway, days after the U.S. president spoke publicly about spending time with the football star.
Kane later helped England defeat Norway, securing the team’s place in the tournament’s semifinals.
Harry Kane Clears Up Trump Golf Speculation
Trump’s remarks on Monday about having once played golf with soccer star Harry Kane sparked widespread speculation over whether the meeting had actually taken place.
Seeking to verify the claim, reporters questioned the England captain during his team’s pre-match press conference in Miami, where the player confirmed the meeting took place and revealed when it occurred.
“I played alright to be honest,” Kane told reporters. “We played about 18 months ago. He invited me to play… So when the President invites you somewhere…”
As for the location, Kane said the round took place in Palm Beach, seemingly referring to Trump’s famous Trump International Golf Club, which features a 27-hole championship course.
The Soccer Star Calls Trump Meeting ‘Pretty Surreal’
At the same press conference, Kane described what it was like to meet one of the world’s most powerful people and also commented on Trump’s golfing ability.
“It was a pretty surreal experience just to meet him, and to play golf with him. His golf is pretty good, to be honest. I hope I can play golf as well as him when I’m his age, that’s for sure,” Kane noted. “So, (it was) a unique experience. I’m just grateful he invited me down to play.”
The admiration appeared to be mutual, judging by Trump’s earlier comments about Kane.
“I think (Harry) Kane is a great player,” Trump said. “See, I played golf with him, and I like him a lot. He’s a good golfer. He’s really great.”
Harry Kane Took On Viral Golf Challenge
Kane’s love for golf is well known, and he has frequently shared photos and videos of himself on the course through Instagram.
Back in May, he took on an unusual golf challenge in partnership with apparel brand Reflo, attempting to complete a par-5 hole in under 90 seconds. The feat would have broken the fastest par-5 record, currently held by professional golfer Thomas Detry.
Using a golf buggy to move quickly between shots, Kane made a determined attempt but completed the hole in two minutes and 26 seconds, well outside the target time. Although he fell short of the record, the Bayern Munich striker still finished with a respectable par, further showcasing his golfing ability.
Harry Kane Reveals Why Golf Matters To Him
Given how demanding football can be, finding time for golf is no easy feat for Kane.
When asked how he balances his schedule during a 2024 interview, the England captain revealed that his love for the sport motivates him to make time whenever possible.
“I mean I love golf so I try and make as much time for golf,” he said. “I kind of just try and find a bit of time for golf because it’s a good switch off for me.”
At the time, he also described himself as “a decent player” before admitting there was still room for improvement.
“I feel like the last couple of years I’ve kind of not been as good, but I can hold my own,” he added.
Kane Reveals How Golf Became An Obsession
Reflecting on how his passion for golf began, Kane revealed that his uncle first introduced him to the sport when he was around 14 or 15 years old.
“It was actually my uncle who took me to the golf course one day,” he recalled, adding that at the time he mostly “used to smash the ball around” for fun rather than focus on improving.
Kane said his interest in the role became more serious around 18 after enjoying a six-week break from international football. During that period, he played golf every day, improving from “about an 18 handicap to about a 10 handicap.”
“From that moment I was just obsessed,” Kane admitted. “I was trying to play as much as possible.”
