FC Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo is expected to report for pre-season training on July 20, exactly one week after the squad officially commenced preparations for the 2026/27 campaign.
According to reports from Cadena SER (h/t Carpetas FCB), the Uruguayan centre-back has been granted extended leave following his participation in the FIFA World Cup but will join Hansi Flick’s sessions well in time for the club’s upcoming tour.
Pre-Season kicks off at Ciutat Esportiva
The update comes as the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper buzzed with activity today, July 13, marking the official start of the new season.
Players not involved in international tournaments reported this morning for routine medical examinations and physical assessments.
Manager Hansi Flick, embarking on his third season at the helm, was present to oversee the return of the available squad members.
While the first day was dedicated to health checks, on-pitch training is scheduled to begin tomorrow, July 14, with a heavy emphasis on physical conditioning.
Araujo’s extended break and future
Araujo’s delayed return is standard protocol for players who featured in the World Cup.
The defender, who was part of the Uruguay squad eliminated by Spain in late June, did not play a single minute at the tournament due to a calf problem.
And he will now enjoy a mandatory rest period before returning to start pre-season training on July 20.

The centre-back did show up at the club training facilities today, but his visit was only to have his calf injury checked by the medical staff and to welcome the rest of his teammates, especially on a day marked by a good number of youth team players being called up.
Despite persistent rumours linking him with a high-profile exit to generate funds, Araujo remains fully committed to the project and is not considering an exit.
Upcoming schedule
Araujo’s return date aligns perfectly with the team’s travel plans. He will have a week to reintegrate before the squad flies to St. George’s Park in England on July 27 for an intensive training camp.
While he is unlikely to feature in the opening behind-closed-doors friendly against CE Europa on July 24, he could be ready to play a key role in the subsequent friendly against Birmingham City on July 31.
