With training camp drawing closer for the Indianapolis Colts, we typically put together a 53-man roster prediction based on what we learned during offseason programs.
We will still be doing that, but the format will be different. Rather than cramming every position group into one article, we’ll devote an entire article to one unit before compiling our predictions at the end.
Up next are the running backs.
Colts‘ running backs on the roster
- Jonathan Taylor
- DJ Giddens
- Seth McGowan
- Ulysses Bentley
- Lincoln Pare
- Anderson Castle
Roster locks: Jonathan Taylor
Taylor will lead the way, but how the rest of the running back depth chart shakes out will be determined during training camp and the preseason.
Why DJ Giddens and Seth McGowan likely make the team
Giddens and McGowan are the primary competitors for the backup running back role, and both are recent draft picks as well, so we can expect these two to be on the team.
That said, I don’t quite consider them roster locks because of their inexperience and the unknowns that come with that, but again, you can expect them to be on the team.
How many running backs will the Colts roster?
It’s common around the NFL for teams to keep three running backs on the 53-man roster, and that is what Shane Steichen has done during his tenure as head coach.
Predicting the Colts’ 53-man roster at running back before training camp
Jonathan Taylor, DJ Giddens, Seth McGowan
Perhaps one of the other backs on the roster emerges and pushes one of Giddens or McGowan for a roster spot, but that remains to be seen. In addition to that, Jake Arthur of Roundtable Sports noted that there were “encouraging” signs that the Colts will be just fine at the backup running back position, with Giddens and McGowan vying for that role.
