The curtain comes down on the 43rd annual Knysna Oyster Festival in the Western Cape this weekend, bringing to an end ten days of sport, entertainment and community celebrations. The festival provides a massive economic boost to the town during the quiet winter months, benefiting restaurants, accommodation establishments, retailers and tourism operators from the influx of thousands of visitors. Last year, it generated about R41 million rand and created more than a thousand temporary jobs.

Festival Manager Nicci Rousseau-Scmidt says the cycle race has approximately the same number of cyclists as last year.
“Last year, over 2 000 cyclists, plus we have a school fundraiser with a cycle race and run. So, it is busy in Knysna, the weather is beautiful and we are happy. The feedback we get from the accommodation association is that the business did really well. We will know the final figures after but at this stage we are very happy.”
