There’s been some bad blood between the Indiana Fever and Phoenix Mercury this season. Despite one particularly rough foul earlier in the season, however, both teams appeared on their best behavior during Thursday’s rematch.
But that doesn’t mean there were no shenanigans during the contest. While the players kept things civil, Mercury fans decided it would be fun to troll Fever guard Sophie Cunningham during the contest.
When Cunningham was called for an offensive foul, Mercury fans all pointed at her.

It was a very clear callback to Cunningham’s viral point at Mercury star DeWanna Bonner from earlier in the season. During a particularly tense game against the Mercury, Cunningham and Bonner got into a verbal altercation on the court. But instead of talking smack, Cunningham just pointed at Bonner. The image went viral, forcing Cunningham to address it multiple times.
So when the Fever narrowly beat the Mercury on their home court Thursday night, Cunningham had to let the fans know about it. As the Fever gathered on the court after the three-point win, Cunningham pointed to the crowd, letting it know she heard their efforts earlier in the contest.

Before joining the Fever, Cunningham spent her first six seasons in Phoenix.
The Fever managed the tight win over the Mercury without Caitlin Clark, who sat out of the back-to-back as part of her recovery from a back issue. Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever with 29 points in the win. Cunningham added nine points, well, 10 if you count the one after the game.
The win pushed the Fever to 13-9 on the season, putting the team squarely in the playoff hunt.
Unless the two teams meet in the postseason, Cunningham’s point will be the final image from that rivalry this season. The Fever and Mercury are not scheduled to meet again in the regular season, meaning Cunningham has the last laugh … for now, at least.
