Kon Knueppel wasn’t on the court Thursday night, but he still managed to become one of the biggest talking points during the Charlotte Hornets‘ NBA Summer League opener. As Charlotte faced the Orlando Magic in Las Vegas, fans quickly noticed Knueppel wasn’t sitting courtside with teammates. Instead, the 20-year-old was positioned directly alongside the Hornets’ coaching staff, watching the game from the bench as if he were part of the coaching group.
The unusual scene immediately generated buzz on social media, with many fans pointing to Knueppel’s well-known basketball IQ and even joking that he looked like a future NBA head coach.
Kon Knueppel’s bench role catches attention
Basketball analyst Mitch Gilfillan was among the first to highlight the moment.
“Charlotte Hornets guard Kon Knueppel, who turns 21 next month, is sitting on the bench with the coaches for NBA Summer League,” Gilfillan wrote on X. “Most players who aren’t participating in a second Summer League sit courtside with teammates. Future head coach.”

While the Hornets haven’t explained the decision, it was certainly an uncommon sight for one of the franchise’s young building blocks.
Charlotte is giving Knueppel a different perspective
The Hornets announced before Summer League that assistant coach Blaine Mueller would serve as the team’s head coach in Las Vegas while overseeing Charlotte’s young roster. Although Knueppel isn’t playing in Summer League, his seat alongside the coaches gives him a unique opportunity to experience games from an entirely different perspective.
Instead of simply watching from the stands, he’s able to listen to conversations about substitutions, defensive adjustments, offensive sets and in-game strategy as they happen. For a player who has long been praised for his basketball intelligence, it’s another way to continue developing even without logging minutes.
Throughout his time at Duke and during his first NBA season, Knueppel earned a reputation as one of the game’s smartest young players. His shooting, passing and decision-making have already made him an important piece of Charlotte’s long-term plans.

Hornets continue evaluating young talent
Knueppel wasn’t the only young player drawing attention in Las Vegas. Charlotte’s Summer League roster features several intriguing prospects, including Liam McNeeley, Ryan Kalkbrenner, Tidjane Salaün, Kylan Boswell and Sion James. The Hornets opened Summer League against Orlando before upcoming matchups with the New Orleans Pelicans, Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks.
Whether Knueppel remains alongside the coaching staff throughout Summer League remains to be seen.
One thing is already clear, though: despite not taking the floor, he found a way to become one of the night’s most-discussed Hornets. His unusual spot on the bench offered a glimpse into how highly Charlotte values not only his talent, but also the basketball mind that has many believing he could have a future in the game long after his playing days are over.
