The Madlanga Commission has heard allegations that the head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), Advocate Andrea Johnson, asked former journalist and now AfriForum spokesperson Barry Bateman to source a document relating to a criminal complaint against suspended Deputy Crime Intelligence head, Major General Feroz Khan.
The complaint stemmed from a case of common assault and intimidation opened by Crime Intelligence officer Brigadier Leonora Phetle, who allegedly accused Khan of assaulting her with a pen.
Retired Colonel Kobus Roelofse, formerly attached to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI/Hawks), told the commission that Khan received the contents of the criminal docket despite being the suspect and therefore not being entitled to access it.
“In other words, General Khan prepared his statement with the benefit of the evidence against him. This was particularly concerning in this case because the complainant and the suspect worked at the same place and the suspect was the complainant’s senior and direct superior.”
“The seed of such sensitive information would enable the suspect to manufacture and tailor his version but also approach other witnesses to influence their versions before they are approached to submit statements,” adds Roelofse.
