Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia says the re-vetting of senior officers, as announced in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address this year, is being implemented in phases.
In a written Parliamentary reply, Cachalia says the process will be done in three phases.
Cachalia says the first phase is dedicated to lieutenant generals and deputy commissioners.
He says of the 23 Lieutenant Generals, 18 have submitted applications, while two members already hold valid security clearance certificates and three were due to exit SAPS at the end of June 2026.
He says in the second phase, for 119 major generals, more than 100 applications have been submitted, and one clearance certificate has already been issued.
Cachalia says a small number of applications from this group are still outstanding, while others are either due to retire or are currently suspended.
The third phase for brigadiers is yet to commence.
Cachalia says that while documents have been submitted, the process to issue clearance certificates remains underway with the State Security Agency.
