Scuderia Ferrari has one of the most interesting cars on the grid due to its focus on aerodynamic development.
While all the attention is rightfully on the power units, given they are the big difference-makers, the other parts of the car have seen a good deal of change as well and represent an untapped market for improvement.
Ferrari, despite lagging behind Mercedes in engine performance, has gone all out with its car development, bringing one aggressive upgrade package after another.
Among them, the Italian Team has brought the famed “Macarena” wing that rotates onto activation, which has definitely stolen headlines for its unique design.
However, while the car has received many aggressive upgrades, it still seems to lag behind Mercedes, which has a highly efficient power unit that has long been the cream of the crop.
The FIA, to help cars catch up to the class-leading power units, has granted teams additional development time and resources. Among them, Ferrari is getting extra help since they are 4% off the mark compared to Red Bull.
How Ferrari is going to upgrade their engine
With the extra resources, technical director Enrico Gualtieri has reportedly set ADUO’s aim to come a few races down the line.
“On the power unit front, Enrico Gualtieri reportedly updated the staff on the progress of the ADUO project,” Giuliano Duschessa wrote for AutoRacer IT, via a translation.
“The slot for the introduction of the new turbocharger, planned with the ADUO 2 package, is reportedly expected to be available within five Grands Prix with the aim of arriving at the Madrid round with the new configuration.
“This update represents one of the most significant changes planned for the Ferrari engine, designed to improve the overall efficiency of the power unit and continue the performance recovery allowed by the development opportunities provided by the FIA regulations. At the same time, the engine department is already looking to the future.
“During the meeting, it was confirmed that bench development work on the future ADUO power unit intended for 2027 has already begun, demonstrating how Ferrari is simultaneously moving forward with work on the current season and the next generation of engines.”
With a good deal of ambition and aim, Ferrari could end up with a more complete car than Mercedes if they make enough gains through their latest push.
