A mineworker has died following a fatal mining accident at the Impala Platinum’s 10 Shaft in Rustenburg, in the North West earlier this week. It is reported that this is the fifth recorded death at the mine this year.
Reports indicate that the worker succumbed to fatal injuries after being struck by an underground locomotive.
Investigations surrounding the incident are underway.
Impala Platinum Spokesperson, Johan Theron, says, “At this stage, the exact cause of the accident is still being investigated. There’s no eyewitness. At this stage, preliminarily, it looks like the employee somehow was injured by one of the underground locomotives. We don’t understand how or when. That’s being investigated. And obviously, the family has been informed, and we are dealing with the family, and the department, and the union, and try, and investigate to provide support as is required.” – Reporting by Tsholofelo Sekwena.
