Johannesburg Mayor, Dada Morero, says plans are underway to ensure that the money owed to Rand Water and Eskom is paid before the end of this month.
The remarks follows National Treasury’s decision to temporarily withhold the equitable share of 69 municipalities in the country in a bid to instill strict fiscal discipline and root out financial misconduct.
Treasury says the release of the funds will depend on how quickly the municipalities can sign repayment agreements with their creditors.
Morero was briefing the media in Johannesburg.
“Rand Water and Eskom will receive their funds by mid-July, as the equitable share will then come into the city, and we confirm that we’ll be paying Eskom and Rand Water. Our existing unauthorised, irregular, fruitless, and wasteful expenditure reduction strategy was revised to align with National Treasury’s guidance and the FMMA Circular 111 and 68. We are working through the historical backlog rather than simply disclosing it,” says Morero.
