Position battles are both real and not real.
They’re real in the sense that players are actually going to spend time jockeying for position on the depth chart, earning or losing playing time based on their performance in practice and throughout however many preseason games the Packers actually play this year.
But I always push back on the idea that guys are going to come out of nowhere, win some real or imagined position battle, and earn himself a place on the roster. That rarely happens, if ever. The Packers’ roster has been essentially set since late April, and only a very few edge cases are going to be decided by anything resembling a position battle. And for that matter, those position battles are just as likely to be decided by injuries or other non-football developments as they are by whatever happens in training camp and in preseason games.
The reality of roster construction is that teams generally hae a good idea who they’re going to keep well in advance of when training camp opens. They know who they like, who they want to keep, and what their roster is capable of doing. Any major changes beyond that probably have more to do with who’s actually available (due to injury) than anything performance related.
Still, position battles make for great content, so we might as well talk about them. If guys aren’t going to get bounced from the roster, a position battle could still determine quite a bit about how much he plays this season.
