Workers at the Masilonyana Local Municipality in Theunissen, Free State, say they have reached a breaking point in their dispute with the municipality over salaries and grading.
Employees have boycotted work, citing unpaid salaries and what they describe as unfair salary practices. They allege that an incorrect grading system has resulted in them receiving less than half of what they should be earning.
The protest comes after the Auditor-General’s recent report identified Masilonyana municipality as one of seven municipalities requiring urgent intervention.
Senior technician at the municipality Pule Tshabalala says workers have repeatedly raised their concerns without success.
“What we got as the employees was a letter from the administration that says that they don’t know which grade we are so it was actually contradictory to what they said in parliament. I’ve been working here, coming to work but i don’t know which position i’m at. it’s not only me. It’s everyone so from 2021 we’ve been coming to work, not knowing exactly what we are doing at work.”
Workers say they will continue to demand clarity on the grading system and payment of outstanding salaries.
