The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is continuing to search for two suspects in connection with the alleged theft of precious metals and stones worth R14 million.
Ekurhuleni Metro Police official was arrested on Friday night, IPID is now on the trail of a businessman and another suspect.
The arrests follow explosive testimony before the Madlanga Commission, where Witness K alleged that she and suspended EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi plotted to raid an apartment in Killarney, Johanneburg and steal the metals in 2023.
IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping says a total of six suspects were involved in the alleged raid, with three arrest warrants currently out and being effected.
“The six suspects raided a property in Killarney, Johannesburg without a warrant and then they seized precious metals, just under R15 million. Instead of registering them in the SAPS occurrence book , they kept themselves and this case is one of our cases that were presented at the Madlanga Commission. We had six suspects, one has since died but for now we have one suspect from Ekurhuleni, one from JMPD and one that is a private person that is a business person in the area of Killarney.”
