ActionSA President Herman Mashaba says his party wants to become the kingmaker in eThekwini Municipality after November’s Local Government Elections (LGE).
Mashaba says the metro has become dysfunctional and residents are paying the price through poor service delivery.
He says ActionSA will work to increase its support in the city after welcoming 18 new members, including Ward 34 independent councillor Andrew Akkers, who takes the party’s representation in the metro council from four to five seats.
Speaking at a party event in Durban North, Mashaba says ActionSA is determined to strengthen its campaign on the ground.
“The city of eThekwini is dysfunctional, the service levels are in government because they get paid but this in coming elections, that is going to change. We hope and we’re going to work hard. We will go to church to pray but we don’t rely only on church, we rely on hard work. We want to work even harder with people like Andrew around and others. We’re gonna make sure that we are the ones actually holding the deciding party that must say, who goes into parliament.”
Meanwhile, the new ActionSA members say they joined the party after feeling neglected and overlooked by their former political parties.
The recruits, who come from the uMkhonto Wesizwe Party (MKP), Patriotic Alliance (PA), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), and the African National Congress (ANC) were unveiled today.
Former PA activist Chantal Adams says that PA’s leadership only thinks of itself.
“They never not once motivated us, I was the councillor candidate for where I lived, I resigned four months ago, till this day no one has come to my house to find out why I resigned and what are my reasons. What I can tell you now is that the party I was in before has no interest for nobody but themselves. The leadership only thinks of itself and nobody else, as long as the collect that fat salary they don’t care about the communities.”
ActionSA is expected to announce a political realignment in eThekwini today ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections. The party says leaders from various political parties, including a sitting ward councillor, will join its ranks at a event in Red Hill, Durban. #sabcnews pic.twitter.com/oQuG34Xn1j
