The Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality in the North West is still leaderless after the Acting Manager, Doctor Auchalie Mothupi, was removed, and the Substantive Manager Olehile Losaba is currently on suspension.
The Mahikeng-based municipality is facing a massive governance crisis as pressure mounts from oversight bodies and residents to find solutions.
A legal firm’s forensic report has uncovered alleged systemic procurement fraud and unauthorised expenditure at an estimated R10 billion.
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has officially recommended that disciplinary action be taken against five high-ranking officials following a probe into R25 million expenditure on procurement on behalf of the Ditsobotla Local Municipality.
Spokesperson of the provincial Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department, Thebeetsile Keameditse, says they are working on finding the solution to all standing issues.
“The department has noted the developments in Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality, and we will in due course engage the municipality with a view of finding a solution to all our standing issues and intervene where necessary. Our interest is good governance and accountability to ensure uninterrupted provision of services to our communities,” says Keameditse.
