During a recent appearance on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football, former Kansas City Chiefs center Mitch Morse discussed Patrick Mahomes’ quick rise to becoming an MVP quarterback in the 2018 season.
“What I also remember that year, specifically, was Patrick Mahomes becoming Patrick Mahomes,” said Morse, “That was 2018, the first year he started. Came out against the Los Angeles Chargers, and then the next week scored six touchdowns against the Pittsburgh Steelers. We were all holding our breath to see if it would end. It didn’t.”

In 2018, Mahomes passed for 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He joined the Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning as the only players to record 5,000 passing yards and 50 touchdowns in an NFL season.
“He (Mahomes) became the MVP in his first year out. We were just along for the ride. That, in particular, was a special season. I would go back to that Week 2 game in Pittsburgh,” said Morse, “He threw for six TDs, and they came back to see his competitive poise in the infancy of his career was profound. You see those guys that have that killer charisma, he’s had that from the jump.”
Morse played center for 10 seasons in the National Football League for the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and Jacksonville Jaguars, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2022. He also played college football for the Missouri Tigers.
