Cabinet has called on all victims identified by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to apply for or claim their individual reparations grant. This was announced during a media briefing on the outcomes of cabinet meeting.
The meeting received an update from Parliament on the implementation of the 2003 TRC recommendations, which approved the granting of reparations to TRC-identified victims, payment of R30,000 medical benefits and other forms of social assistance and community rehabilitation.
Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, says, “17,455 of the 21,676 TRC identified victims who applied for ones of individual reparations received their R30,000 grant. The total amount paid for the ones of individual reparation is nearly R500 million. To ensure that all eligible beneficiaries receive the support due to them, on June 2026 a general notice was published in the government gazette calling for the TRC-identified victims or the next of kin, who have not yet applied for reparations, to come forward and claim their (ones of reparations of 30,000 grants.”
Ntshavheni says that outstanding draft regulations relating to the health and community rehabilitation are at various stages of finalization.
